The “Moonglade Dream” marks Lee Tae Sung’s first solo exhibition in China, featuring Touch My Mood, the Moonglade series and the Butterfly Dream series. As both an actor and a painter, Lee fluidly traverses the realms of performance and art, passionately engaging in creative self-expression. Through a profound exploration of light, he intricately layers over a hundred brushstrokes to depict the multiple dimensions of this intangible existence. His creations are not merely experiments with color; they are journeys of the spirit. Each layer of color symbolizes the connections between individuals—intertwining, complementing, and birthing new possibilities. In this process, the artist intertwines his inner experiences with the external world, seeking the meaning of life and self-awareness.

Once lost in the relentless pursuit of perfection, Lee has gradually shed the weight of external expectations during his artistic journey, turning instead to the whispers of his own heart. As he expresses “creation is not just a display of skill but a quest for self-existence”. By merging color with emotion and intertwining his inner experiences with the external world, he captures the essence of life on canvas, revealing the intricate and profound ties that bind us together.
In his Touch My Mood series, Lee narrates tales of fate and interpersonal relationships through layers of vibrant colors. Countless hues blend together, reflecting individuality yet the interdependence of human connections; a relationship that influences the very foundation of existence, the essence of life itself. As the artist notes “all beings possess an inherent radiance, and light cannot shine in isolation”, it requires the contrast of darkness to reveal its beauty. Thus, each color in Lee’s works is infused with vitality and emotion, prompting viewers reflection on their own relationships.
The artist’s latest series, Moonglade, resembles the delicate “reflection of moonlight on water”, capturing the shimmer across oceans and lakes. Through the ripples of moonlit reflections, the series seeks to explore the essence of “existence”. While the moon’s presence remains eternal, our perceptions vary over time, mirroring how our understanding and experience of life’s essence evolves at different stages. With diverse brushstrokes and colors, the artist weaves the texture of “moon shadows”, a tapestry of memory and insight uniquely touched by moonlight’s glow. Throughout his creative journey, the artist has formed a profound appreciation for mindful observation, translated on his canvas where beauty and dream intertwine; artworks that represent a silent hymn to the moon—a poetic reverie sung softly in its light.
Meanwhile, in the Butterfly Dream series, Lee explores the freedom of escaping perfection. Through continuous experimentation, he embraces Zhuangzi’s philosophy of “oneness between self and the universe”, creating works that are both free and spontaneous. With polishing tools and smooth brushes, Lee breathes life into the canvas, where brushstrokes flutter like butterfly wings, embodying the seamless integration of self and the external world whilst redefining the interaction between color and form. These works present Lee’s artistic innovation and also convey the philosophy of life’s impermanence and the freedom it entails.
This exhibition is not only an exploration of color and light but also a journey of the self-discovery. Like Moonglade reflecting on the water, Lee’s creative process mirrors his observations of the world, self-reflection and evolution; revealing his deep understanding of the complexity and diversity of life. By harmoniously blending themes of fate and life, these poetic works welcome the arrival of spring, embodying reflection and a sense of hope for the future.
